It’s hats off to hat hair this season.

Slinking around (read: clumsily trying not to elbow stylists and trip over hairdryer cables) backstage at fashion shows we see a lot of covetable hair styles about to trot down the catwalk.
perfectly perky bows adorning sleek pony tails, intricate and fly-away free braids, towering teased beehives, all of which you’d love to recreate at home but you only have one pair of hands.
And half an hour in the morning.
And, well, skill – that would be useful too.

So the lazy, skill-less amongst us rejoiced to see a trend emerge this season: hat hair. Yes, actual sweaty, smooshed-down, stuck to your forehead hat hair. The more worn and undone looking the better too. praise be.
The most direct reference of this emerging trend came from the brain of Eugene Souleiman for the grunge girls of preen by Thornton Bregazzi. 'She’s been in the desert, wearing a beanie for 2 days and has just taken it off' says Souleiman, 'the texture is hard and squashed, but romantic. Cobweb-y.'

Of course creating this look (without the option of asking models to actually head off to a hot destination wearing a beanie for a few days) isn’t as simple as it sounds. Mini, tight 'braids' were created by weaving hat elastic around a small section of hair before being hidden underneath or behind ears to add a nomadic look.
The cobweb-y texture was meticulously created with Wella EIMI Dry Me Dry Shampoo, some mesh (to flatten the hair), two diffusers, and a pair of the new ghd platinum + straighteners to flatten (NOT straighten) a nape-skimming pony tail.

.
Not so simple then, but dirty hair, a texture spray and a head-hugging hat worn on your commute will give you similar results.

We also saw this no/low maintenance trend at Calvin Klein in New York, where, at Raf Simons' ‘Jaws’ themed show, the models wore graduation mortarboards and red beanies over hair that was still soaking wet at the ends.
Styled by Guido palau, the effect was cool-girl nonchalance to the max. A breeze to recreate at home, but mind you don’t catch a cold.

The Sweat Look @ashish #lfw Sunday ravers #hairbysammcknight m/up @isamayaffrench style by @annatrevelyan

Sam McKnight pushed the DGAF limits even further at Ashish, where his creations were ‘post-rave at 6 am’. Teamed with make-up pro Isamaya Ffrench (and her lashings of neon MAC Chromacake) the hair was worn and wet, stuck over the face and flat to the skull. A look he achieved by using ;lots of water, products, more water, and gel. And mousse. Oh, and oil'.
